Party by title but we’re just having a small gathering with light refreshments. We will start cleaning up and clearing the space since our rental period ends today. It has been a fun journey!

As always, you guys are welcomed to join us πŸ™‚ We will probably be open from 6pm-8pm or so. Thanks everyone!

In our minds, we’re planning many things so this might not be the last time you see us! (We’re a determined and stubborn bunch, if you haven’t noticed already ;))

Barbarian Sakura 6/23/14- Retro Game night

Standard

Since I am working today, I might not be able to post about today’s event so I am posting at 3 AM!

We’re having retro game night; super smash brothers on the gamecube and n64, if you are gamers, you have probably heard of the game. It’s a really fun game; you can have up to four players. I think even if you don’t know how to play (I am a total amateur in this game), just smashing the buttons and seeing how you can hurt your opponents is pretty cool. Please don’t tell the host that because I don’t want to be the reason for broken controllers. Super smash brothers is a really popular game by Nintendo; in fact, Nintendo had been teasing fans about future release of a new super smash brother on the new game console WII U on youtube.

Yu-gi-oh cards is the Japanese equivalent of Magic cards in terms of strategic gameplay and popularity. Its popularity has not waned since it came out in 1999. If you’re like me and have not a clue what it is about, it would be nice to go to the event and learn about it. Our host for the night, artist Christopher Hong would patiently explain it!

Barbarian Sakura Art Show- Opening Reception 6/20/14 @ 7:30pm

Standard

As promised, here are the invitation posters to our Art Show! Apologize for the constant absence but I could not believe the amount of work we had to do for an Art Show. We had to find a place, review the contract, get insurance for the event, plan events, budget & budget, order postcards, make collaborative artworks and make posters (involves concept, drafts, proofs, revisions and long hour of graphic design for somebody who is just learning illustrator). There is still a lot of work to do but you could definitely help by spreading the words and coming to the gallery opening!

Since it’s the four of us, we don’t have a lot of food to offer, but there is snacks and alcohol! ^_^
Here are the posters for the event! We would have a different event every night; since all of us have full time jobs, we can only go after work so the normal hours would be 7:30pm – 10pm.

Press Release: Barbarian Sakura brings together NYC-based artists Samantha Lee, Sandra Munoz, Chris Hong, and Sean Hanlon in a visual exploration of Japan through a compilation of mixed media works inspired by the artist’s initial contact with the Japanese culture. As some pieces invoke the spontaneous, free-wheeling, humorous, and at times, barbaric spirit of the Tokyo-based Gutai artists of the 1950’s, other pieces speak to the pure, serene, refined, elegance of the Japanese cherry blossom, captured so ubiquitously across media, time and art movements in the history of Japanese art. In all pieces, however, we find exposure to a unique culture leaving deep rooted impressions that color the imagination. While the media on view in Barbarian Sakura will share the discoveries made by these artists in their experiments with the Japanese culture, the special events scheduled throughout the week will offer the guests a more interactive approach to exploring their own connections with Japan.

Looking forward to seeing you guys!
