Irresistible Charm of Little Charly

Charly 2

Charly Juju

Charly 1

I remember the night Charly was born. My cousin updated us on hangout with the status of his wife while she was in the hospital. I met my other cousin for dinner and we were waiting anxiously for the good news. It took a while but the moment they sent the picture of wrinkly Charly, we were so overwhelmed with joy. It was the first time we had felt that way since the passing of our uncle which was so sudden and tragic; his wife thought he was fast asleep the night before and it wasn’t until the morning after, she realized he had passed.
I was in my head, in my world when my cousin told us and asked us to go over to his parents’ house. Before the message, I felt inspired and was painting autumn in Japan of last year of which I had remembered very well. My emotions changed immediately; how vulnerable life seems, our parents are really aging, I am at the age where I should know what I want and should be pursuing it, but I am not, is my cousin and his pregnant wife okay? We gathered in the small living room of their cluttered apartment as the cops sat near the front door, waiting, recording. Whispering amongst ourselves, my aunt recalled what happened the night before, that morning, between tears and sniffles. We were there and didn’t know what to talk about except how to take care of the situation formally- the funeral parlor, the burial ground, death note from the doctor, how to arrange this and that.
A day or two after the burial, a week after Charly’s expected due date, Charly was born.
Momentarily we were distracted from grief and life goes on in a weird way. My cousin who was the same age, who grew up with us, became a father.
I think the event was a brief awakening; my overachiever cousin quit her comfortable job to join a start up- she said she was crying nonstop for months because she didn’t know how to cope with the loss, change and risk. I was more eager to finish the interior design courses, opened myself up to a second chance- I was a bit too optimistic at the same time. Life is never where we expect it to go; my cousin struggles with her new job, I felt uncomfortable and sad because life didn’t give me what I had wanted no matter how hard I tried. It wasn’t within our control.
Maybe what we see now is temporary. The impermanence of things will overcome these moments where we feel unwell, hurt, disappointed; it might change to something else, maybe these events are the catalysts for better changes. Just like how Charly grew from a little Buddha to a mischievous child. I am rambling on, what I want to say is I am grateful we have Charly in our lives. We are so lucky to have her. Counting our blessings! She’s irresistible 🙂 ❤

Cappuccino’s conversation with mademoiselle croissant

Standard

Maison Smith

Random dialogue inspired by conversation with Mrs NS

“I think I finally understand,” the cup said to the croissant.
“Understand what?”
“It’s about developing yourself. The whole time I thought you didn’t like me.”
“Huh?”
“Well I’m growing, let’s wait until my foam disappears.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about…”
“I am a cappuccino. When the foam and air combines as time passes, the foam will flatten and I will return to my liquidy original state; milk with espresso.”
“And then?”
“And then, we can probably shake hands and be friends. Croissant dunk into coffee.”
The croissant took one last look at the cup.
“I will probably be gone by then.”

Food in Quebec City

Standard

One of the best parts of traveling, is trying the local cuisine! Also a great excuse to be a bit indulgent 🙂

Conti Caffe
Conti Caffe
I was getting a bit hangry when I arrived at the hotel since it was 3pm and I hadn’t had lunch. Receptionist recommended Conti caffe which was a few blocks from the hotel (like 2min walk). Side story, when I arrived and told him I was traveling by myself, the middle aged receptionist probably thought I would be lonely and circled/drew marks on the maps where there were a couple of bars lined up. He also mentioned it might be of interest a few times.
Conti Caffe has a very modern interior with pop paintings (apparently the popular medium is encaustic with acrylic). This is Spaghetti with snow crab, fennel, dill and lime (from website). It’s light, refreshing but a bit salty.

Ciel Bistro Bar
Ciel Bistro Bar
Ciel is located on the top floor of a hotel. The ground moves so you get a panoramic view of the city without moving. From up high, you see all of quebec from the plains of abrahams to the other tall building where you have to pay to go to observatory (notice in the background). On that day, I was planning to go to the observatory but I was starving and asked the observatory receptionist if there was a restaurant there- she said no so I thought I would get lunch and go back. But I found Ciel which has a good view of the city. It was like killing two birds with one stone.
Seafood platter- grilled swordfish, smoked salmon, grilled scallops, fish pockets (near the baguette), cauliflowers and mussels. I love the colors and setting of the dish. To be honest, I have no idea what the magenta sauce is.

Le Lepain Saute
Le Lepain Saute
Located in lower town quebec, Le Lepain Saute was seasonally decorated with pumpkins, scarecrows and autumn decorations.
This was the lunch special which included rabbit confit with wine sauce, salad and roasted potatoes. So delicious.

Le Lepain Saute
French onion soup- make sure you order the one with quebec cheese.

Le Lepain Saute
Rabbit with mustard sauce and wine sauce- As you can tell, I liked this place so much I went twice. I think lunch is a much better deal. The flavors and quality are the same!

Joe Smoked Meat
Joe Smoked Meat This is part of a chain. It’s a casual spot for locals. Nothing out of the ordinary but not bad.

Creperie Bretonne
Creperie Bretonne
Crepe with mushrooms, swiss, onions and roast beef. You can customize your crepe, base includes two ingredients. The crepe is a bit thicker and has more batter to contain the savory ingredients.

Maple ice cream
Maple syrup ice cream from lower town quebec! Soft serve yum. There is also the option of maple syrup mixed with vanilla.

Quebec= Food heaven with beautiful platings. Hard to articulate my thoughts as I daydream about food. Sorry.

Quebec City

Standard

Bonjour~ On a 5 day solo trip to Quebec city, I walked on average of 19,000 steps a day. Quebec city reminds me of san francisco with its fantastic view but killer slopes.

montmorency waterfalls
Montmorency waterfalls- apparently there is a bus that goes there in the summer. When it’s offseason, to get there by public transportation, you would have to take the #800 bus to beauport which has one million stops at every block.
What I like about this waterfall is there are so many angles you can view the waterfalls; stairs on the right, cable ride on the left, bottom view, top view with the cafe, over the bridge from right above the waterfalls, another bridge few feet behind.

old quebec
View of old Quebec from Citadelle
I think if you haven’t been to Europe and want a taste of old world romanticism, Quebec is definitely the place to go. It’s quiet and the architect dates way back from 1608. You can get lost and not be very lost because after the first 2 days, I didn’t use the map on my phone that much.

governor's promenade
The governor’s promenade in old quebec connects to Plains of Abrahams. It has a great view of the town across the river Levis. The Levis ferry is currently on strike so I didn’t get to go to the other side. The first day I was there I walked along the governor’s promenade with its 310 steps and mostly ascending. This is one of my favorite walks. I must have went forth at least 4 times and back 1 time. It’s calming and quiet because it’s a bit strenuous not many tourists go on it.

batisse the royal goat
Batisse the royal goat from Citadelle- given to the city of Quebec by Britain, it symbolizes “stubborness” since goats are very stubborn, better words are unrelenting determination to protect its family/country. Actual use is more symbolic than literal although it does charge at random people according to our funny tour guide. Tour guide also mentioned in the 1970s when there was a nationalist movement, the goat was spray painted blue and couldn’t get the paint out ever 😦
(The apple is from farmer’s market!)

This is the first time I have traveled alone for a few consecutive days. I didn’t really go to many places-went to Musée des Beaux-Arts, Ursulines museum, Citadelle, Montmorency waterfalls and Marché du Vieux-Port de Québec! It helped clear my mind and know how to move forward. What to leave behind and what to hold onto.

Post about food next!
